For the OP.
This is the kind of things you need to get used to hearing, no matter what profession you pick in EVE.
In most cases its just friendly teasing because most realize (as J'Poll already pointed out) that miners are needed in EVE just as much as any other profession.
But you will find people who are more extreme and really do their best to grief miners (The new order as an example, im sure they will come along and post shortly).
Make sure you try to find a group of players that is fine with whatever profession you go with, and can accept the fact that sometimes mining is just what you want to do 
But this also goes in reverse. Many miners will trash down on people who are against mining, or people like The new order because they feel its "unfair" that an "innocent" miner gets harassed and blown up.
Evolve this attitude and you will find your self getting angry and frustrated as soon as you loose a barge or mining ship, and it will severely destroy your wish to play EVE.
In simple words, if you enjoy mining, please go ahead and do it, but keep in mind that its not "safe" (nothing is in EVE), and if the worst happen and you loose a ship, dont start to yell or scream about it.
Learn from your loss, change location, change your fit, keep a closer eye on local, dont mine during a war dec when you know hostiles are around, stay aligned, get to know the locals and dont go AFK.
